BARIGADE 98 Holds Halal Bihalal, Reaffirms Commitment to Safeguard Democracy and Civil Supremacy

The INDONESIAN (JAKARTA) – The Indonesian People’s Front to Guard Democracy 98 (BARIGADE 98) held a Halal Bihalal gathering themed “Guard Democracy, Protect Indonesia” at Restaurant Tjikini Lima, Jakarta, on Monday (13/4/2026).

The event served as both a venue for fellowship and a national reflection forum, bringing together figures and movement activists to discuss the direction of Indonesia’s democracy amidst increasingly complex dynamics.

In his address, the Chairman of BARIGADE 98, Benny Ramdhani, delivered sharp criticism regarding the current national situation. He highlighted the growing tendency for active military personnel to occupy civilian positions, a development deemed potentially detrimental to the fundamental principles of democracy.

According to Benny, the Indonesian nation is currently at a critical juncture in determining the country’s path—whether to remain consistent with civil supremacy within a democratic framework, or to shift toward the dominance of specific power interests.

“What we face today is a major choice: will this country remain controlled by civilian forces in the spirit of democracy, or will it be dominated by a regime that intervenes in all aspects of state life?” he asserted.

He also criticized several policies that appear increasingly oriented toward the control of natural resources and state budgets, which essentially belong to the people. In his view, this condition indicates a deviation from the primary purpose of the state, which is to maximize public welfare.

Furthermore, Benny expressed concern over what he termed a “state anomaly,” where the space for freedom of expression is shrinking. He referenced activists facing legal proceedings and public criticism being silenced in the name of authority.

During the forum, Benny also highlighted alleged acts of violence involving certain officials, including the case involving Andi Yunus. He assessed that such actions contradict the noble values of the military, such as Sapta Marga and Sumpah Prajurit, which uphold nationalism, patriotism, and loyalty to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.

“The military doctrine is about loyalty to the Red and White [flag], safeguarding national sovereignty, not serving power interests or pleasing those in authority,” he stated.

The national discussion also featured senior movement figures who shared their critical perspectives. The forum was moderated by Mustakim, with Febri serving as the rapporteur for the various ideas and criticisms raised.

Concluding his speech, Benny expressed his gratitude to all figures, speakers, and guests in attendance. He emphasized that despite various challenges, the people still hold the power to steer the nation’s democracy.

“Even when we feel the country is not in good shape, the people still hold the power to protect democracy. Thank you to the senior activists, speakers, and all guests. Please forgive me, physically and spiritually. Minal aidzin wal faizin,” he concluded.
