The INDONESIAN (Jakarta) — A new wave of civil society consolidation has officially begun. The Confederation of Indonesian NGOs (Konfederasi LSM Indonesia) was launched as a “grand home for activists,” designed not only to unite networks but also to consolidate courage, integrity, and steadfastness in advocating for the people’s interests in a more focused and impactful manner. During this momentum, Teuku Z. Arifin was inaugurated as the National Coordinator.
This launch marks the emergence of a more organized civil force amid the growing need for firm and independent public oversight. The Confederation serves as a strategic platform bringing together various cross-sectoral elements ranging from anti-corruption, legal affairs, environment, education, public services, to human rights into a single, solid, and well-measured movement.
More than just an umbrella organization, the confederation is projected to act as a moral hub and organizational force capable of channeling critical energy into tangible collective power. Amidst national dynamics often driven by conflicting interests, the presence of the Confederation is expected to serve as an anchor for public ethics and a reminder that power must always serve the people.
As National Coordinator, Teuku Z. Arifin emphasized that the establishment of this confederation is a response to the urgent need for a national movement architecture capable of gathering and directing civil society strength more strategically.
“The Confederation of Indonesian NGOs is not merely an association, but a grand home for activists to unite courage, integrity, and the earnestness of struggle to safeguard the people’s interests and ensure the nation remains on the path of justice and accountability.”
He stressed that this confederation is not built as a symbolic or ceremonial forum, but as a living force that actively works, speaks out, and takes action. In this context, civil society is called upon not only to be present when issues peak, but to consistently act as the moral guardians of democracy.
“We want to ensure that civil society does not only appear during times of chaos, but stands firm to oversee policies, maintain the morality of power, and ensure the people’s voice is not lost in the decision-making process.”
Previously, various NGO elements across regions possess significant advocacy power and field experience, but often operate in isolation. This confederation aims to bridge such fragmentation without compromising the independence of each member, while strengthening collective bargaining power in monitoring public policies.
Looking ahead, the Confederation will focus on capacity building, cross-sectoral idea consolidation, experience sharing, and more systematic, data-driven policy monitoring. Consequently, criticisms raised will no longer be disjointed, but will form a credible, measurable, and audible collective force.
This launch also reaffirms that the pulse of civil society struggle remains strong and relevant. Under the leadership of Teuku Z. Arifin, the Confederation is expected to grow as a center for moral consolidation, a space for public service, and a vanguard ensuring that the people’s interests remain the main axis of the nation’s journey.
