MAI to Report West Sumatra Police to National Police Reform Team

The performance of the Indonesian National Police (Polri), particularly the West Sumatra Regional Police (Polda Sumbar), has come under public scrutiny for its slow response in handling illegal mining activities within the customary territory of Nagari Sulit Air, Solok Regency, West Sumatra.

Secretary-General of the Majelis Adat Indonesia (MAI), M. Rafik Datuk Rajo Kuaso, criticized the lack of concrete action from Polda Sumbar despite widespread evidence and public awareness of ongoing illegal mining operations.

“What’s going on here? The mining sites are clear, the heavy equipment is there, the violations are obvious—so why hasn’t anyone been named a suspect? The customary community might see this as deliberate negligence,” Rafik said in a written statement on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

He further alleged that the unclear legal process raises suspicion that certain individuals within law enforcement might be protecting specific interests.

“The state must not pretend to be blind. If justice can be bought, then fairness has already died on this land of adat. We demand an open explanation from Polda Sumbar and the Solok District Police,” he asserted.

Rafik added that MAI will soon file a formal report to the National Police Reform Team and Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) to follow up on indications of negligence and the sluggish legal process surrounding the Sulit Air illegal mining case.

“We have prepared an official report to the Police Reform Team. If local law enforcement cannot uphold justice, then the central authorities must intervene,” he concluded firmly.
