The INDONESIAN (Simalungun) – The Legal Aid Institute (LBH) Parsaoran Simalungun Branch has reaffirmed its role as a frontline institution in expanding access to justice, particularly for low-income and vulnerable communities navigating legal processes.

This commitment was realized through a Legal Counseling program held at the Pematangsiantar Class II A Correctional Facility (Rutan/Lapas), focusing on the main topic “Legal Aid for Low-Income Communities” on Saturday (24/01).

The event was attended enthusiastically by inmates and participants. The counseling aimed to provide basic understanding of citizens’ legal rights, especially the right to free legal representation as guaranteed by law.

Marihot F. Sinaga, S.H., Director of LBH Parsaoran Simalungun Branch, stated that the activity is part of the institute’s ongoing efforts to ensure every citizen has unhindered access to justice.

“Social status and economic conditions should not be barriers to obtaining legal defense. Legal aid is a constitutional right that must be properly understood and utilized,” he emphasized.

During the counseling, participants were also briefed on the mechanisms for accessing free legal aid, stages of judicial proceedings, and the critical role of legal advisors in assisting suspects and defendants to ensure fair and proportionate legal processes.

The activity also strengthens the national legal aid program implemented through collaboration between the state and accredited legal aid institutions, to ensure the principle of equality before the law is felt even by the most marginalized communities.

The Pematangsiantar Class II A Correctional Facility welcomed the program positively, noting that legal counseling is a strategic step to enhance inmates’ legal awareness, enabling them to engage with legal processes more knowledgeably and responsibly.
