The INDONESIAN, (Jakarta)— Benyamin Walilo S.M., M.M., candidate for Chairman of the Regional Leadership Board (DPD) of the Forum Lestari Indonesia (FLI) for the Province of Highland Papua, has expressed optimism and strong commitment in addressing various environmental damage and pollution issues occurring across Papua region.

In his statement, Benyamin highlighted that the environmental conditions in Papua, including Highland Papua, currently face serious challenges due to the activities of several companies, including large corporations, which are deemed to contribute significantly to natural destruction.

The impacts include forest degradation, water source pollution, and disruption to ecosystem balance and the livelihoods of indigenous communities.

“This issue is not merely about the environment, but concerns the survival, dignity, and future of the Papuan people. We can no longer remain silent toward practices that ignore sustainability principles,” emphasized Benyamin Walilo.

As a prospective leader of FLI Highland Papua, he carries a vision to strengthen collective efforts in preserving nature through synergy between indigenous communities, local governments, civil organizations, and business actors committed to environmental protection.

He affirmed that Forum Lestari Indonesia will serve as a strategic platform for advocacy, public education, and supervision of industrial activities that pose potential risks to the environment.

The approach adopted is not only critical but also solution-oriented, fair, and focused on long-term sustainability.

“We do not reject investment, but any incoming investment must respect nature and the rights of indigenous peoples. Development must proceed in harmony with conservation principles,” he added.

On the same occasion, Benyamin Walilo also extended his congratulations and appreciation for the establishment of the Regional Leadership Board (DPD) of Forum Lestari Indonesia in North Sumatra. He views this as an important step in expanding the national environmental movement.

“We congratulate the establishment of FLI North Sumatra. This is a significant momentum to strengthen the network of environmental movements nationwide. May the presence of FLI in various regions become a moral and social force in safeguarding the Indonesian earth,” he stated.

Benyamin believes that with the formation of management bodies across various provinces, Forum Lestari Indonesia will grow stronger in overseeing environmental issues at both regional and national levels.

Concluding his statement, he invited all elements of society to jointly protect and care for Papua’s natural resources as a precious legacy for future generations.

“Papua is a trust for the future. It is our collective responsibility to safeguard it with full awareness, courage, and integrity,” he concluded.
