JAKARTA — Dozens of students from the Institute of Social and Management Sciences (STIAMI) held a symbolic Black September protest on the campus grounds in Johar Baru, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
The students carried banners and lit candles as a symbol of solidarity and a rejection of efforts to erase the memory of various tragedies in Indonesia.
Led by STIAMI Student President Rizky Pratama, the students voiced several demands. They urged the Minister of Human Rights to investigate and prosecute perpetrators of human rights violations, reject violence and repressive actions by authorities, and called on the government to prioritize education and healthcare.
The students also called on the Minister of Forestry to take responsibility for statements that had been made and demanded a thorough investigation into forest fires in Kalimantan.
“States may forget, but we will not” and “Rejecting Forgetfulness, Preserving Memory” were among the messages displayed on the protest banners.
Rizky said the protest was an expression of solidarity as well as an effort by students to preserve the public memory of various tragedies and injustices.
“Never remain silent when injustice is right in front of us. Because if we do not speak up, then who will?” Rizky said.
Another STIAMI student, Gabriela, said students have a moral responsibility to speak out on issues affecting society and strengthen solidarity with those fighting for justice.
Meanwhile, another student, Fakhri, urged fellow students not to be afraid to stand with the people.
“We must have the courage to speak up, monitor the process, and make sure that justice is truly upheld,” he said.
