Commemorating Kartini Day 2026, Indonesian Women’s Congress Solidifies Strategic Role as Driving Force of Cultural Diplomacy

The Indonesian (Jakarta) – On the commemoration of Kartini Day, 21 April 2026, the Indonesian Women’s Congress (KOWANI) solidified its strategic position as the driving force of cultural diplomacy by hosting a grand event titled “KOWANI Goes to UNESCO”.

Held on a massive scale in the heart of the capital city, the event marked a historic moment as it successfully gathered leaders and representatives from 111 women’s organizations across Indonesia.

“The presence of these 111 organizations is far more than just a ceremony; it is a collective statement that Indonesian women stand united behind one great mission: to ensure the kebaya is recognized by the world as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Indonesia,” said Nannie Hadi Tjahjanto, Chairperson of KOWANI, in a media release issued in Jakarta on Wednesday, 29 April 2026.

Previously, in her inspiring cultural address, Nannie emphasized that the momentum of Kartini Day 2026 must serve as a turning point for the nation’s cultural sovereignty. She explained that the kebaya is the common thread weaving together the diversity of the archipelago—a garment that transcends boundaries of ethnicity and social class.

She also stressed that the “Goes to UNESCO” initiative is the highest form of tribute to the struggle of R.A. Kartini, who famously wore the kebaya as a symbol of resistance and intellectual dignity.

“With the participation of 111 women’s organizations, KOWANI aims to demonstrate to the international community that support for the kebaya is inclusive and deeply rooted. It is fully backed by all elements of society from various professions, religions, and regions,” she stated.

The event featured the signing of the “Commitment of the Nation’s Mothers” by all chairpersons of the 111 participating organizations. This commitment document serves as authentic proof of community involvement, a crucial requirement for the dossier evaluation by the UNESCO Committee in Paris.

“KOWANI consciously takes on the role of the main facilitator, ensuring that every women’s organization in the country, from Sabang to Merauke, feels a shared sense of ownership over this nomination process,” Nannie added.

She noted that this collaboration also dispels the notion that cultural preservation is solely the government’s responsibility. Instead, it is a moral duty for every individual under the banner of women’s organizations.

Beyond administrative aspects, KOWANI also launched a cultural literacy campaign aimed at educating the younger generation about the various styles and deep philosophy of the Indonesian kebaya.

Nannie reminded everyone that UNESCO recognition is only the beginning; the greater task is to ensure the kebaya remains a “living heritage”.

“Therefore, through the vast network of 111 organizations reaching millions of members across the country, KOWANI is committed to revitalizing the use of kebaya in various public spaces, making it a garment that adapts to the times without losing its traditional essence and original identity,” she said.

The 2026 Kartini Day celebration concluded with a stunning visual parade, where thousands of women from the 111 delegations showcased kebaya styles unique to their respective regions, creating a magnificent cultural mosaic for the public to witness.

“This move sends a strong signal to the world that Indonesia is a nation rich in culture and deeply committed to preserving its traditions. As an organization holding consultative status at the UN ECOSOC, KOWANI pledges to continue overseeing the diplomatic process until the kebaya is officially recognized as Indonesia’s heritage on the global stage,” Nannie added.
