Thousands Attend President Prabowo’s Birthday at Velodrome, Haidar Alwi: The Police Must Remain Under the President’s Authority

The INDONESIAN – Thousands of people filled the Jakarta International Velodrome on Monday (October 20, 2025) to celebrate the birthday of Indonesia’s 8th President, Prabowo Subianto. The event, organized by the Haidar Alwi Institute (HAI), also coincided with the first anniversary of the Prabowo–Gibran administration.

The celebration was both festive and solemn. Participants from various regions joined the event themed “Grand Consolidation: Upholding the Police’s Independence Under the President.”

President of the Haidar Alwi Institute, Ir. Haidar Alwi, emphasized that the gathering represented the people’s moral support for the nation’s leadership under President Prabowo.

“We are consolidating our stance that the independence of the National Police must remain under the President. Today also marks one year of the Prabowo–Gibran administration and the President’s birthday. We hope he continues to lead wisely for a prosperous and advanced Indonesia,” said Haidar at the venue.

Around 5,000 participants filled the Velodrome from the afternoon, beginning the event with an interfaith prayer for President Prabowo’s health and long life.

HAI Director Sandri Rumanama stated that those attending were citizens committed to preserving national unity and rejecting attempts to pit the President against the Police.

> “Those who came today are Indonesians who love their country. They don’t want the President and the Police to be set against each other. Their message is clear the independence of the Police must remain under the President,” Sandri affirmed.

Several national figures were also present, including Prof. (Ris) Dr. Hermawan Sulistyo (Expert Advisor to the National Police Chief), Sugeng Teguh Santoso (Chairman of Indonesia Police Watch), and political observer Bony Hargens.

Sugeng Teguh Santoso reaffirmed that the Police’s status as an independent institution was a key achievement of the 1998 Reformation and must not be undermined.

“We must remember that the National Police was born out of reform. Any proposal to place it under a ministry would betray the spirit of reform. I believe President Prabowo will safeguard the Police’s professionalism and independence,” he said.
