The INDONESIAN , (Jakarta)— The name Syafrudin Budiman, S.IP., affectionately known as Gus Din, is widely recognized across diverse spheres of public activity: from student movements, journalism, and political communication, to MSME empowerment, the corporate sector, and State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).
This extensive career has established Gus Din as a figure with versatile experience in organization, politics, media, people’s economy, and corporate governance.
Born into a family with deep traditions of religious outreach, education, and social activism, Gus Din is the youngest son of the late Ustadz Ach. Zainuddin HR and the late Mardhiyah. He is also the grandson of the late Ustadz/KH Abdul Kadir Muhammad (AKM/HAKAM), an influential figure in Muhammadiyah preaching and education in Sumenep and Kangean Island, Madura.
Legacy of Preaching and Education
Family environment formed the bedrock of Gus Din’s character. His father was active in religious outreach and Muhammadiyah organizations, while his mother contributed to the women’s movement through Nasyiatul Aisyiyah and Aisyiyah of Sumenep Regency.
His grandfather, KH Abdul Kadir Muhammad, was a prominent educator and preacher instrumental in advancing Muhammadiyah in Madura. Through his service on Kangean Island, he was a driving force behind the establishment of the Modern Islamic Boarding School Foundation (YPPMI) Arjasa Kangean — still a key center of Islamic education in the region.
This heritage of religious values, education, organization, and community service became the foundation upon which Gus Din built his public career.
Forged in Student Activism and IMM
While studying Political Science at Universitas Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya (UWKS), Gus Din was active in numerous student organizations. He held positions in the Student Senate, Student Executive Board (BEM), and the Political Science Department Association.
His organizational journey deepened through the Muhammadiyah Student Association (IMM). Within this Muhammadiyah cadre organization, Gus Din progressed through leadership tiers from the branch to the national level.
He served as Chairman of the IMM Universitas Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya Branch, Head of the Hikmah Division for East Java Regional Board, and eventually Head of Social-Economic Affairs on the IMM Central Board.
His skill in leading strategic forums earned him the nickname “Tiger of the Assembly,” particularly after being entrusted as Chairman of the Presidium of the XII IMM Congress in Ambon (2006) and Chairman of the Presidium of the IMM Tanwir Assembly ahead of the XIII Congress in Bandar Lampung (2008).
Building a Career in Journalism and Political Communication
Following his student activism, Gus Din entered journalism as a reporter for Surabaya Post. His experience as a journalist sharpened his ability to analyze socio-political issues, build networks, and understand the dynamics of public opinion.
This background evolved into a profession as a media and political communication consultant, specializing in public communication, media strategy, political research, issue mapping, and public opinion management.
The combination of organizational experience, journalism, and political education established Gus Din as a political communication practitioner actively contributing ideas on democracy, leadership, public policy, and national development.
Consistently Championing People’s Economy
Beyond politics and public communication, Gus Din is known as a driving force for the people’s economy.
He founded the Indonesian SME Party, which carries a platform of empowering MSMEs, cooperatives, entrepreneurship, and grassroots economics. In 2022, the Indonesian SME Party took a political step by merging into the National Mandate Party (PAN).
Throughout his activities, Gus Din consistently advocates strengthening MSMEs as the backbone of the national economy. He currently serves as Chairman of the Indonesian SME Association.
In his view, national economic development must begin with empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises — long the largest source of employment in Indonesia.
Political Career and National Volunteer Work
In his political journey, Gus Din supported the Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa ticket in the 2014 Presidential Election and remained active in national political activities through PAN.
In the 2019 election, he joined the Jokowi Volunteer Alliance (ARJ) supporting the Joko Widodo-KH Ma’ruf Amin ticket.
For the 2024 Presidential Election, Gus Din returned to national volunteer movements as National Coordinator of the Prabowo-Gibran Volunteer Alliance (ARPG) and Chairman of the Central Presidium of the Barisan Pembaharuan 08 (PP-BP 08).
His roles in various volunteer movements demonstrate his capacity to build political communication, organizational consolidation, and national networks.
Carrying the Mandate in the SOE Sector
A new chapter in Gus Din’s service began when he was entrusted as Commissioner of PT Jasa Marga Related Business (JMRB), a subsidiary of a state-owned enterprise operating in supporting businesses for toll roads.
This appointment marked the convergence of his long experience in organization, communication, people’s economy, and leadership with the demands of professionalism and modern corporate governance.
For Gus Din, a position within the SOE realm is not merely a structural title — it is a contribution to national development through good corporate governance, innovation, and a public-service orientation.
