Datuk Karaeng Makaampo Thamrin Sandala Calls for the Establishment of the Indonesian Adat Council: “Adat Is the Cultural Fortress and Ideological Unity of the Nation”

The INDONESIAN||Sangihe, North Sulawesi — A prominent traditional leader from the Kingdom of Sangihe Tabukan, His Excellency Datuk Karaeng Makaampo Thamrin Sandala, SE, has called for the establishment of the Indonesian Adat Council (Majelis Adat Indonesia / MAI) as a national body to unite, strengthen, and revive the living values of Indonesia’s diverse adat and cultural heritage.

In his statement, Datuk Karaeng emphasized that the formation of the Indonesian Adat Council is not merely ceremonial but rather a people’s necessity and a demand of the times.

The Indonesian Adat Council must be realized. This is not a choice but a necessity for our people. It is a demand of the times that concerns the very existence of kings, sultans, and the traditional institutions that form the soul of the Nusantara,” he said.

He expressed deep concern that many noble traditions and ancestral customs are gradually being eroded by globalization and rapid social change.

Our traditions are fading, our customs are being worn away by the waves of modernization. Therefore, we must revive and uplift our adat and culture so they remain preserved and sustained for generations to come,” he stated solemnly.

Furthermore, His Excellency underlined that adat is not merely a relic of the past, but a living fortress of culture and the ideological unity of the Indonesian nation. According to him, adat holds a vital role in maintaining social harmony, strengthening national identity, and ensuring the continuity of sustainable development.

Adat is the fortress of our culture and the ideological unity of Indonesia. It must be preserved and protected as the foundation for continuous national development,” he affirmed.

Datuk Karaeng further explained that the Indonesian Adat Council (MAI) is envisioned to be an ethical and cultural institution of the nation, serving as a collective house for kings, sultans, datuks, and traditional leaders from all corners of the archipelago. The Council is expected to act as a moral compass and cultural guardian in the midst of societal transformation — a grand house of brotherhood that bridges ancestral wisdom with Indonesia’s modern path of progress.

The Indonesian Adat Council is the true embodiment of our will to uphold the dignity and honor of the nation. From adat is born civilization, and from a strong culture grows a sovereign Indonesia,” Datuk Karaeng concluded with conviction.
