The INDONESIAN, (Medan)– Fiah Qalilah Kamaliah never imagined the night of 28 February 2026 would split her life in two: before and after. That evening, her husband Andi (RA) was returning home after meeting a friend on Jalan Garuda, Medan—yet he would never arrive as he had left.

At the Jalan Juanda–Jalan Imam Bonjol intersection, a BMW 320i struck the motorcycle carrying Andi from the left side. Witnesses estimated the vehicle was travelling at 100–140 km/h with no sign of braking before impact.

What followed was more than a traffic accident. It became the story of an ordinary family pitted against a system that does not always favour those without wealth or influence.

The Night That Changed Everything

Thirty-seven-year-old Andi was a creative entrepreneur and, for Fiah and their children, the family’s sole provider in every sense of the word.

He was riding as a passenger with his friend Mustafa Pulungan, unaware that a BMW 320i registered to PT Industri Pembungkus Internasional (PT IPI)—a major packaging firm based in the Medan Industrial Zone—was speeding toward the quiet junction from their left.

The driver, identified by his initials Melvern Chandra (MC), is the son of PT IPI’s President Director and grandson of the company owner. Immediately after the violent collision, MC fled the scene.

“No checks were carried out on the driver at the scene. No tests of any kind were conducted. My husband was found with: a broken arm (humerus), broken legs (femur and tibia), fractured pelvis, maxillofacial fractures, and severe injuries to the jaw and teeth,” Fiah told reporters in Medan on Monday (20/7/2026).

Doctors estimate Andi will need nearly two years of recovery, and that full healing is only possible if all required follow-up surgeries proceed without delay.

“I care for him day and night. Our children ask when their father will walk again. I do not know what to tell them,” said Fiah, known affectionately as Fia.

Two Weeks of Silence, Then an Arrival in Force

For more than two weeks after the accident, neither MC nor his family made contact. No one visited the hospital. No report was filed with police.

While Andi fought for his life in intensive care, the man who struck him seemed to vanish. When representatives finally appeared at the hospital, they did not come alone.

According to the victim’s family and supported by documentation, those accompanying MC’s representatives included members of the Indonesian Air Force, police officers, and a doctor. Fia said their presence was not to offer assistance, but to project power.

“My husband was initially treated at Elisabeth Hospital, but once MC’s side learned of the estimated costs, they pressured us to move him to Bunda Thamrin Hospital. Surgeries were performed there—but only part of what was medically required,” she explained.

An Agreement Signed Under Duress: 14 March 2026

Two weeks after the accident, a Peace Agreement was signed. Andi remained critically weak, still recovering from life-threatening injuries. Fia stood beside him without legal representation.

According to the family’s account and supporting documents, a police officer was present during the signing and appeared to direct the process. Overwhelmed and without counsel, Andi’s family agreed to the document.

Under Article 1 Paragraph (6) of the agreement, MC formally pledged to cover all follow-up surgeries recommended by specialists: shoulder reconstruction, jaw and oral reconstruction, and dental implant placement. The family accepted this assurance.

Written Promises, Broken Obligations

Weeks after Andi was discharged, his family submitted the specialist’s schedule for further procedures. MC refused. Formal medical recommendations were sent—again, no response.

“We issued a formal legal notice. The reply came not from MC himself, but from a law firm representing him, signed by three advocates,” Fia recounted with sadness.

In essence, the response claimed all obligations had been fulfilled and the matter was considered closed. Most notably, the four-page reply made no mention whatsoever of the follow-up surgeries explicitly required under Article 1 Paragraph (6)—the only disputed clause in the entire agreement.

“The complete omission of this core obligation in a four-page rebuttal raises serious questions that our legal team is now investigating,” she said.

Today: Still Awaiting Surgery, Still Awaiting Justice

Andi still requires three procedures that have not been performed: shoulder reconstruction, jaw and oral reconstruction, and dental implants—all directly caused by the 28 February collision.

“Every day without surgery increases the risk of permanent functional impairment,” doctors have warned.

Fia, a schoolteacher, now bears every burden alone: caring for her husband, raising their children, and navigating a long, exhausting legal process.

Every day she hears the same question from her children: “When will Papa be like he was before?”

A Plea for Public Attention

All supporting documents are available for verification: the Peace Agreement, specialist medical recommendations, formal legal notices, MC’s reply, the police report, and photographic evidence of injuries.

“This is not merely a legal dispute between two parties. It is a question of whether a written, signed agreement, witnessed by others, still carries weight in this country—when one side holds vastly greater resources and power,” Fiah lamented.

Andi waits. Fiah fights. And their children still ask a question no child should ever have to ask.

“When will Papa walk again?” Fiah ended, her voice filled with hope.
