GMPRI Central Board Commends National Police Chief’s Firm Stance in Rejecting Position as Minister of Police

PRIME NEWS POST

The INDONESIAN , (Jakarta)— The Central Executive Board (DPP) of the Indonesian Republic Students and Youth Movement (GMPRI) has expressed highest appreciation to the National Police Chief of the Republic of Indonesia, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, for his firm and statesmanlike stance in rejecting the proposal to place the National Police (Polri) under a ministry and the offer to serve as Minister of Police. This position reflects the integrity of a state institution leader who understands Polri’s strategic role as the guardian of public safety and order, as well as a key pillar in upholding the President’s authority and the integrity of the state’s constitutional system.

The GMPRI Central Board views the National Police Chief’s move as a strategic and constitutional decision, as it keeps Polri directly under the President  in line with the mandate of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia and the spirit of reform that calls for law enforcement agencies to be neutral, professional, and free from practical political interests. Rejecting the establishment of a Ministry of Police also demonstrates moral courage to prevent overlapping authority and potential “twin suns” in national security governance. If Polri were placed under a ministry, it would open the door to political interference that could weaken the Polri institution, the state, and the President’s leadership itself.

The National Police Chief’s firm declaration that he would rather resign and even become an ordinary citizen than compromise Polri’s principles and independence serves as an exemplary leadership model worthy of note in the history of Indonesia’s security sector reform. Raja Agung Nusantara, General Chairman of the GMPRI Central Board, emphasized that GMPRI stands firmly in support of Polri as a professional, integrity-driven state institution that prioritizes the people’s interests and the unity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.

Therefore, the GMPRI Central Board calls on all elements of the nation  especially policymakers  to respect and safeguard Polri’s independence, reject all forms of politicization of security institutions, and consistently uphold constitutional mandates and reform aspirations for the sake of a healthy and just democratic future for Indonesia.
