INDIGENOUS COUNCIL OF INDONESIA COMMENDS DANANTARA’S PARTNERSHIP WITH KPK FOR SOE AUDITS: ANTI-CORRUPTION COMMITMENT MUST GO HAND-IN-HAND WITH PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT

The INDONESIAN , (Jakarta)– The Indigenous Council of Indonesia (Majelis Adat Indonesia / MAI) has welcomed the move by the Danantara Sovereign Wealth Fund to partner with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in auditing alleged corruption within State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), while also praising positive gains in the performance of several SOEs that have recorded profit growth and turned around from losses.

The statement was delivered by MAI Secretary-General Dato’ M. Rafik Datuk Rajo Kuaso following his participation in the Asia-Africa Kings Conference in Denpasar, Bali, which brought together kings, sultans, indigenous leaders, academics, and delegates from across Asia and Africa.

According to Dato’ M. Rafik, Danantara’s willingness to seek KPK’s oversight and audit support sends a strong signal that efforts to build clean SOE governance are moving beyond slogans to concrete action.

“The Indigenous Council of Indonesia commends Danantara’s openness in inviting the KPK to investigate alleged corruption within SOEs. This shows moral courage: reforming SOEs requires more than restructuring – it must be paired with firm law enforcement whenever irregularities are found,” he said.

He noted that plans to close hundreds of persistently loss-making SOEs should not be seen merely as an efficiency measure, but as an opportunity to resolve longstanding governance issues that have burdened state finances.

MAI emphasized that all suspected misconduct must be handled transparently, so no party can hide behind corporate restructuring processes.

At the same time, MAI applauded Danantara’s track record in recent months of driving profit growth across several SOEs. Published reports show many state firms have posted significant earnings growth, with some previously loss-making entities returning to profitability after restructuring, business transformation, and capital strengthening.

These results, Dato’ M. Rafik said, demonstrate that governance reform and efficiency deliver tangible benefits when implemented consistently.

“The improved performance of these SOEs deserves recognition. It proves management reforms can yield positive outcomes for state enterprises. Yet financial gains must go hand in hand with integrity – profits must not rise while corrupt practices remain unchecked,” he stressed.

MAI added that SOE success should be measured not only by profit margins, but also by public benefit, job creation, contributions to the national economy, and maintaining public trust in state asset management.

Upholding the indigenous values of honesty, trust, and accountability, MAI reaffirmed that anti-corruption is deeply rooted in Nusantara wisdom.

“Our traditions teach the principle of amanah – trust. State wealth is not personal property, but a deposit entrusted by the people, to be guarded faithfully. Every rupiah of public funds must be accounted for honestly and transparently,” Dato’ M. Rafik stated.

MAI hopes the Danantara–KPK synergy will extend beyond audits to lay the foundation for SOE governance that is increasingly professional, transparent, accountable, and free from corruption.

If anti-corruption efforts run parallel with performance improvements, he said, SOEs will become even stronger engines of national development and shared prosperity.

“We support all steps to safeguard state assets, stamp out corruption, and boost SOE competitiveness. Economic success and integrity must advance together – this is the foundation of a strong, dignified Indonesia,” Dato’ M. Rafik Datuk Rajo Kuaso concluded.
