The INDONESIAN, JAKARTA – The meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and United States President Donald Trump is considered not as simple as regular economic cooperation. Barisan Rakyat Nusantara (BaraNusa) detects broader strategic interests behind the bilateral agenda.
BaraNusa General Chair Adi Kurniawan questioned the direction and substance of the two leaders’ meeting. According to him, the public has the right to know openly what key topics were discussed, especially if they concern national natural resource interests.
“We must ensure this meeting does not result in strategic decisions that harm the nation’s interests. The issue of extending PT Freeport’s contract for the next 20 years must be explained transparently,” Adi stressed in a written statement on Friday (February 20).
Adi stated that if discussions regarding the continuation of the major mining company’s contract did take place, the government is obligated to disclose all details to the people. This is because mining management is not just a business matter, but one that concerns national economic sovereignty.
“Freeport is not just about investment, but about sovereignty. Indonesia must not appear weak in front of the United States,” he said.
He also reminded that Indonesia-US relations should be built on the principle of equality, not geopolitical pressure. The government, he added, must ensure that any resulting agreements truly prioritize the people’s interests.
BaraNusa emphasized it will continue to oversee every strategic policy that could potentially impact the management of national natural resources. According to Adi, transparency and accountability are key to preventing public suspicion about the direction of government policy.
“Indonesia is a sovereign nation. National leadership must stand firm, not submit to global pressure,” he concluded.
