Village Self-Reliance as the Fortress of the National Economy: Prof. Kun Nurachadijat Analyzes President Prabowo Subianto’s Vision

THE INDONESIAN , (Jakarta)— Economic analyst and academic Prof. Dr. Kun Nurachadijat views President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto’s statement that “rural communities do not rely on the US Dollar” as a reflection of Indonesia’s grassroots economic reality, which has proven highly resilient against global economic turbulence. According to him, this straightforward statement carries deep strategic meaning regarding the structural resilience of the national economy, which is fundamentally rooted in villages and coastal communities.

In his remarks, Prof. Kun explained that Indonesia’s rural economy essentially operates within a self-sustaining ecosystem. Most production, distribution, and consumption activities among rural residents take place within local supply chains and use the Indonesian Rupiah. As a result, fluctuations in the US Dollar exchange rate do not directly disrupt the economic livelihoods of rural communities — unlike in urban areas, which are heavily dependent on imported goods, industries relying on foreign raw materials, and modern consumption patterns.

“President Prabowo Subianto is reminding this nation that Indonesia’s true economic foundation lies in its villages. Food security, traditional markets, agricultural produce, and community economic activities serve as the nation’s anchor amid global economic storms,” Prof. Kun Nurachadijat stated.

Furthermore, he considers the various strategic programs under President Prabowo’s administration not merely as social initiatives, but as a comprehensive framework to strengthen a people-centered national economy. The Free Nutritious Meals Program, for example, is seen as a circular economic stimulus that creates a stable market for farmers, livestock breeders, fishermen, and rural micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). The food requirements of this program are sourced directly from local production, ensuring that money circulates within the country and remains unaffected by foreign currency volatility.

In addition, strengthening institutional structures through the Red and White Village Cooperatives is highlighted as a key instrument to ensure that economic added value stays within local regions. These cooperatives are being developed to serve as distribution hubs, centers for consolidating harvest yields, and the backbone of a village-based national supply chain. A similar approach is reinforced through the development of Red and White Fishing Villages, which aims to improve the welfare of coastal communities through better access to infrastructure, distribution networks, and integrated markets.

According to Prof. Kun, the synergy between national food programs, village cooperatives, and the development of coastal regions will create a resilient and sovereign economic ecosystem. “When money circulates within villages, food is produced by our own people, and consumption needs are met by domestic resources, Indonesia will possess a far stronger economic foundation than one that merely depends on global market trends,” he emphasized.

He also stressed that the government must continue maintaining macroeconomic stability through the roles of Bank Indonesia and the Ministry of Finance. At the same time, however, the public should remain optimistic that Indonesia holds great domestic potential — provided that villages, cooperatives, and the food sector are strengthened seriously and sustainably.

“If our villages and fishing communities are strong, Indonesia will remain standing firm in the face of any global economic pressure. This is the very essence of the national economic independence that President Prabowo Subianto is working to build,” Prof. Kun Nurachadijat concluded.
