ACEH YOUTH LEADER: POLICY CERTAINTY FOR BPMA IS VITAL FOR INVESTMENT AND PUBLIC WELFARE

PRIME NEWS POST

THE INDONESIAN ,(ACEH) – Rifqi Maulana, S.H., National Executive Board member of the Indonesian Law Students Association (DPN PERMAHI) and prominent Acehnese youth figure, has stated that discussions over replacing Nasri Djalal as Head of the Aceh Oil and Gas Management Agency (BPMA) must be framed within an objective, data-driven, and future-oriented evaluation of the agency’s performance.

Rifqi noted that Nasri Djalal has held the post for only around one and a half years. For a strategic institution such as BPMA, this timeframe is insufficient to fully assess leadership outcomes – particularly given the long-cycle, technically complex nature of the oil and gas sector, which relies heavily on policy continuity.

The statement was delivered on Sunday, 5 July 2026.

“BPMA cannot be governed through hasty turnover. Oil and gas management requires clear direction, consistent engagement with the central government, investor confidence, and sustained programme delivery. If every shift in public discourse is met with leadership changes, it is Aceh’s own interests that will suffer most,” Rifqi Maulana, S.H. said.

He stressed that Nasri Djalal should be given reasonable space to complete his work agenda and demonstrate measurable results. While evaluation is essential in a democracy, it must serve as a tool for improvement rather than merely creating institutional uncertainty.

The BPMA leadership position is critical, Rifqi explained, as the agency sits at the intersection of Aceh’s interests, central government policy, industry stakeholders, and communities. Its head must maintain constructive communication, strengthen coordination, and ensure that resource management goes beyond investment figures to deliver tangible benefits for the Acehnese people.

“Nasri Djalal bears the heavy responsibility of ensuring Aceh’s oil and gas potential is managed professionally, transparently, and in the region’s best interests. With only one and a half years in office, what is needed now is constructive support, objective oversight, and space to deliver on strategic priorities,” he said.

Rifqi also welcomed the central government’s cautious approach to developments at BPMA. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia is right to ensure decisions regarding this strategic national energy body are grounded in legal considerations, institutional needs, investment stability, and the public good.

This measured stance avoids reactionary decisions driven by temporary pressure, instead prioritising sound, accountable judgment. Policy certainty is the foundation of the oil and gas sector – especially as Aceh seeks to accelerate investment, boost production, and unlock new economic opportunities for its people.

“Moving forward, BPMA must act as an engine of Aceh’s economy. The challenge extends beyond managing natural resources: it means creating jobs, building local workforce capacity, growing regional enterprises, and increasing revenues that communities can actually feel. An agenda of this scale demands stable leadership and sustained effort,” Rifqi emphasised.

DPN PERMAHI urged all parties to prioritise constructive criticism and responsible oversight. Divergent views should strengthen governance rather than weaken an institution delivering critical strategic work.

Retaining Nasri Djalal until a comprehensive, objective evaluation is completed is a path worthy of consideration, Rifqi added. Aceh needs a focused BPMA – not one perpetually mired in leadership disputes.

With backing from the central government, alignment with the Aceh administration, and consistent leadership at BPMA, the oil and gas sector can become a cornerstone of Aceh’s future economy: securing investment, broadening regional benefits, and lifting shared prosperity sustainably.
