The 2025 Greenship Awards, an accolade for stakeholders consistently implementing green building principles in Indonesia, was held on Friday (December 5, 2025) at the Sopo Del Grand Ballroom in Kuningan, Jakarta.
Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has once again achieved proud national recognition. The innovative CLT Nusantara Pavilion won the 2025 Greenship Awards in the Best Greenship Innovation category, an acknowledgment of collaborative research that combines the strengths of Indonesian academics, industry, and sustainable technology.
The pavilion is the result of interdisciplinary collaboration between UGM’s faculties of architecture, forestry, and civil engineering, together with industry partners committed to promoting the use of eco-friendly materials. Through this combination of expertise, the team delivered an innovation that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also addresses challenges in energy, efficiency, and material sustainability.
In its development, the UGM team sought to raise awareness that Indonesia has abundant timber resources that can be used in modern, sustainable ways. Using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) technology, previously underutilized wood was processed into high-strength construction material.
“We want to show that Indonesian wood, which has long been considered ordinary, can actually have extraordinary value when combined with CLT technology. From this research, we modified CLT into an innovative pavilion design, and the result was recognized with the Greenship Award,” said a representative of the UGM research team.
The CLT Nusantara Pavilion also prioritizes energy independence. All of the pavilion’s electricity needs are met by integrated solar panels. The generated energy is then stored in local battery products, with all components manufactured domestically.
This technology integration not only strengthens sustainability aspects but also serves as a tangible form of collaboration between the university, researchers, and national industry players.
The success of this research has proven to have a direct positive impact on Indonesia’s CLT processing industry. Participating industry partners have seen a significant increase in production demand, particularly for modern wooden house projects.
“They say the source of innovation is at UGM. This shows that academic research can be transformed into real solutions for society and industry,” the representative added.
Through the pavilion, UGM aims to convey an important message: Indonesia has extraordinary natural wealth—from timber and solar energy to growing local technological capabilities.
“With the right research and technology, we can utilize these resources wisely and sustainably. That is the spirit we carry through the CLT Nusantara Pavilion,” they concluded.
