Restore People’s Sovereignty: Government Must Stand for Public Interest

PRIME NEWS POST

The INDONESIAN, (Jakarta)— In view of the national situation, socio-economic conditions, and various challenges in governance today, the Matraman Declaration sets forth a firm position: the State must once again place the people’s interests as its highest priority.

Government must not serve only political elites, privileged groups, or oligarchs. State power is fundamentally a public trust — to be exercised fairly, transparently, accountably, and in service of the people’s welfare.

Accordingly, the Matraman Declaration issues the following demands:

1. Restore Purchasing Power and Public Welfare

The Government must take immediate, concrete steps to lower prices of essential goods, ease the people’s economic burden, and avoid excessive taxation that erodes household purchasing power. Creating jobs, raising incomes, and ensuring equitable prosperity must become central priorities.

2. Suspend Danantara and Merah Putih Village Cooperatives Pending Transparency

We call for an immediate suspension of the Danantara program and the Merah Putih Village/Urban Village Cooperative initiative until robust safeguards are in place — including full transparency, independent oversight, and mechanisms publicly accountable to the people.

3. President Must Take Responsibility for Public Safety

President Prabowo Subianto must provide clear explanations and ensure government accountability regarding food-safety incidents linked to the Free Nutritious Meals program, as well as concerns over carbon monoxide exposure and the impact of land and forest fires that threaten public health and safety. No child or community should be put at risk in the name of any government program.

4. Restore the Authority and Neutrality of the National Police

We urge the Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Kapolri) to ensure the force acts professionally and independently — never as an instrument of partisan politics or power. The Police must stand above all factions, serving the law and the public interest alone.

5. Investigate Alleged Illegal Wiretapping and Prosecute Those Responsible

Law enforcement authorities must fully investigate allegations of illegal surveillance — identifying all those who ordered, carried out, or otherwise participated in such acts. No one should be above the law. Violations of privacy and fundamental rights must be addressed through a transparent, objective legal process.

6. Investigate Alleged Subversive Actions Objectively

All allegations linked to Listyo Sigit Prabowo and related parties must be examined independently, objectively, and strictly on the basis of evidence. Anyone found to have broken the law must be held accountable — without exception or special treatment.

7. Reform and Clean Up Public Institutions from Abuse of Power

The President must conduct a comprehensive review of his Cabinet, alongside the National Police, the Armed Forces, the Corruption Eradication Commission, the Attorney General’s Office, and state-owned enterprises — including supervisory and commissioner positions. Officials must serve the public based on professional integrity and national interest, not personal or political loyalty. All conflicts of interest and abuse of authority must be addressed legally.

8. Restore the Nation’s Identity — Sovereign, Self-Reliant, and Dignified

Indonesia must stand firmly on the principles of popular sovereignty, national independence, social justice, and a national identity that upholds democracy and the rule of law. The State must guarantee people’s rights, protect freedoms, and ensure clean, fair, and accountable governance.

Act Now — Do Not Ignore the People’s Voice

These demands require immediate, measurable action. The Government cannot continue to disregard public anxiety and legitimate aspirations. Should the administration fail to demonstrate genuine commitment to reform and restoring public trust, the Matraman Declaration calls for constitutional mechanisms — including the possibility of new elections — to return the people’s mandate to its rightful owners.

Sovereignty resides with the people. Government exists to serve the people — not to rule over them.

Let Us Reclaim the People’s Sovereignty!
