The INDONESIAN,(Jakarta) – The Betawi Customary Council (Dewan Adat Bamus Betawi) held its National Reconciliation Gathering (Halal Bihalal) and 3rd Working Meeting (Raker) of 2026 at the Vocational Building in Jakarta on Sunday, May 10, 2026. This event served as an important milestone to strengthen bonds of fellowship, consolidate organizational unity, and reaffirm commitment to preserving Betawi cultural identity amid Jakarta’s development into a global city.
The gathering proceeded in a warm, family-like atmosphere, attended by customary leaders, organizational board members, community figures, Betawi youth representatives, art communities, and various other elements of society.
Beyond being a moment for mutual forgiveness following Eid al-Fitr, the forum also functioned as a strategic discussion platform to outline the future direction of the Betawi community’s efforts.
M. Rifky, widely known as Eki Pitung, Chairman of the Betawi Customary Council, stated that this year’s working meeting holds special significance, as Jakarta will mark its 500th anniversary in 2027. He emphasized that the Betawi people, as Jakarta’s indigenous inhabitants, must remain a vital part of the capital’s development without losing their cultural identity.
“Betawi is not only part of Jakarta’s history, but also part of Indonesia’s national identity. Therefore, Betawi culture, traditions, customs, and values must be continuously preserved and passed down to the younger generation,” Eki Pitung said.
He explained that the Council — as an umbrella body for social organizations, foundations, cultural communities, and Betawi groups — bears great responsibility to safeguard cultural values while strengthening national unity and cohesion.
During the 3rd Working Meeting, a number of strategic programs were discussed, covering cultural preservation, empowerment of customary communities, strengthening youth roles, and developing social activities rooted in local culture.
One key agenda item was the proposal to preserve traditional Betawi neighborhoods, which are gradually losing their distinct identity due to rapid urban development and modernization. Areas including Kemayoran, Tanah Abang, Kebon Jeruk, Kampung Melayu, Marunda, and other regions were proposed to receive special protection as designated Betawi cultural zones.
According to Eki, these areas hold deep historical value, representing the long-standing heritage and history of the Betawi community.
“We want Betawi neighborhoods to remain preserved forever. We must not let our dialect, traditions, or unique architectural styles vanish due to modern progress. This is essential to safeguarding Jakarta’s true identity,” he stated.
He noted that as Jakarta evolves into a global city, it must still provide space for local communities and cultures so that it never loses its historical roots. The Council also urged local authorities to formally designate certain areas as ethnic villages or Betawi cultural heritage sites.
Aside from cultural preservation, the meeting also addressed efforts to improve the quality of human resources within the Betawi community through partnerships with the Ministry of Manpower and the National Professional Certification Board (BNSP). These programs aim to provide training and professional certification for Betawi artists and cultural practitioners.
Eki emphasized that Betawi artists — who have long dedicated themselves to preserving local culture — deserve official recognition and respect for their contributions.
“We want Betawi cultural workers to hold professional certifications and receive proper appreciation for their role in safeguarding Betawi heritage,” he said.
On this occasion, the Betawi Customary Council also announced its plan to formally recommend President Prabowo Subianto be conferred the title of “Father of World Peace.” This proposal is based on the Council’s observation of the President’s active stance and consistent efforts to promote global peace across various international forums.
Eki added that the spirit of peace championed by President Prabowo aligns closely with Indonesian cultural values, which prioritize unity, tolerance, and harmony.
“We see President Prabowo’s efforts to spread messages of global peace as truly remarkable. Indonesia must continue to be recognized as a nation that loves peace and upholds brotherhood among all nations,” he said.
He also called on the entire Betawi community and all residents of Jakarta to maintain harmony and avoid any conflicts that could divide national unity.
“Let us protect Jakarta, preserve Betawi culture, and safeguard the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. Whoever comes to Jakarta to seek livelihoods, pursue education, or build a life — let us work together to maintain peace and brotherhood,” he concluded.
Through this 2026 National Reconciliation Gathering and 3rd Working Meeting, the Betawi Customary Council aims to strengthen its internal solidarity, make tangible contributions to preserving Betawi culture, enhance community well-being, and support Jakarta’s development as a global city that remains deeply rooted in its local heritage.
