Through Legal Empowerment, LBH Parsaoran Simalungun Disseminates Information on Judicial Review Remedies at Class IIA Narcotics Prison

The INDONESIAN (P.Siantar)— The Simalungun branch of the Parsaoran Legal Aid Institute (LBH Parsaoran) has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to justice by holding a legal empowerment programme at the Class IIA Narcotics Prison in Pematangsiantar on Sunday, 8 June 2026.

Carried under the theme “Judicial Review Remedies for Low‑Income Communities”, the activity forms part of the institute’s ongoing work to raise public legal literacy — especially among inmates, who retain constitutional rights to legal aid and fair treatment.

Participants followed the session with great enthusiasm. Materials covered fundamental legal rights, the procedure for filing a Judicial Review (Peninjauan Kembali or PK), how to obtain free legal assistance, and the vital role of counsel at every stage of court proceedings.

Marihot F. Sinaga, S.H., M.H., Director of LBH Parsaoran Simalungun, stressed that the initiative advances both humanitarian goals and inclusive law enforcement.

“This is one of many legal empowerment sessions we have held at this prison. We want every detainee to fully understand their legal rights, because justice does not end simply because someone is serving a sentence,” Marihot said.

He emphasised that legal aid is a fundamental right guaranteed by the state, available to all citizens regardless of economic or social standing.

Attendees also received practical guidance: how to qualify for free legal services, what defence lawyers do in court, and why understanding full legal procedures helps them go through the process responsibly and with clear awareness.

Pujiono Slamet, A.Md.IP., S.E., M.Si., Head of the Class IIA Narcotics Prison, conveyed appreciation and full support through Krispinus Tarigan, A.Md.IP., S.H., M.H., Chief of the Inmate Development Section.

“This programme serves a strategic purpose: it sharpens inmates’ grasp of the law and builds stronger legal awareness while they undergo rehabilitation,” Krispinus said. “We fully back such activities — they deliver tangible benefits. Good legal literacy helps inmates know their rights and obligations and supports far more effective reintegration work.”

The programme also contributes to the National Legal Aid Programme, which aims to strengthen cooperation between legal aid bodies and state institutions in upholding the principle of equality before the law.

LBH Parsaoran Simalungun and the prison authority reaffirmed plans to organise similar events regularly, both inside correctional facilities and in the wider community, in support of the Ministry of Immigration and Correction’s drive to lift overall legal awareness nationwide.
