The INDONESIAN (JAKARTA)— As the commemoration of Bhayangkara Day draws near, Ir. Haidar Alwi, M.T., President of the Haidar Alwi Institute (HAI) and Haidar Alwi Care (HAC), as well as a Member of the Advisory Board of the ITB Alumni Association, has called on the press, academics, community leaders, and all elements of society to give greater attention to the various achievements, service, and contributions of the Indonesian National Police (Polri) in maintaining security, public order, and national stability.
According to Haidar Alwi, Bhayangkara Day is not merely a moment for the police force to celebrate, but also an appropriate occasion for national reflection on the sacrifices, dedication, and milestones the institution has recorded in safeguarding the nation’s journey.
“The National Police is one of the main pillars maintaining state stability. Amid increasingly complex challenges — ranging from conventional crime, cybercrime, terrorism, and drug trafficking to rapidly evolving social dynamics — the police remain at the forefront to protect the public and safeguard national interests,” Haidar Alwi stated in Jakarta.
In recent years, he noted, the police have made significant progress through institutional transformation, the modernization of digital-based public services, improved law enforcement standards, and various social and humanitarian programs directly felt by the community.
He also highlighted the force’s success in maintaining security during major national and international events, strengthening efforts to combat corruption, narcotics trafficking, human smuggling, gambling, cybercrime, and other offenses that could disrupt national stability.
“Solving thousands of criminal cases, securing major strategic national agendas, and actively participating in disaster response and humanitarian work show that the police continue to carry out their duties and serve the people, the nation, and the state in tangible ways,” he said.
These achievements, Haidar Alwi added, need to be widely known by the public through objective, balanced, and constructive reporting, so that society gains a complete picture of the police’s performance.
For this reason, he urged the media not only to highlight problems that arise but also to give proportional coverage to the force’s successes, innovations, and stories of service by officers who work around the clock to serve the community.
“The media holds a strategic role in shaping public awareness. Information presented objectively helps the public understand both the challenges and the progress the police have made. This, in turn, will further strengthen public trust,” he explained.
Furthermore, Haidar Alwi invited academics, civil society organizations, youth groups, social communities, and national figures to build a culture of appreciation for the dedication of state officials working in the public interest.
Appreciation for the police’s achievements does not mean closing the door to criticism, he emphasized; rather, it serves as moral support to help the force continue evolving into a more professional, modern, precise, humane, and trusted institution.
“Appreciation and evaluation must go hand in hand. When the police demonstrate good performance, they deserve recognition from the public. At the same time, shortcomings must be used as material for self-reflection and continuous improvement, so that the institution grows stronger and more reliable,” Haidar Alwi stressed.
Ahead of Bhayangkara Day, he expressed hope that media coverage would not focus solely on ceremonial aspects, but also bring to light inspiring stories of officers serving in the field, innovations in public service, successes in maintaining security and order, and the police’s tangible contributions to national development.
He believes that objective and balanced narratives will strengthen relations between the public, media, and police, fostering harmonious collaboration in preserving national unity and progress.
“As we approach Bhayangkara Day, let us pay tribute to all police personnel who have dedicated their energy, thoughts, and even their lives to safeguarding the nation’s security. May the police grow ever more professional, closer to the people, more beloved by the community, and remain the frontline shield protecting the unity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia,” Haidar Alwi concluded.
