FLI North Sumatra Issues Legal Notice and Reports Business Operators in Medan over Strong Indications of Environmental Pollution

PRIME NEWS POST

The INDONESIAN, (Medan)— The Regional Leadership Board of Forum Lestari Indonesia (FLI) for North Sumatra Province, through its Operational Division represented by Faisal C.G Ompusunggu, presented the results of field observations and investigations regarding several business activities allegedly causing environmental pollution in Medan City, North Sumatra.

The investigation was carried out at two locations: a business owned by Mr. Marbun (livestock waste processing) located at Jalan Asrama Pondok Kelapa No. 191, Medan, which has been officially reported to the North Sumatra Provincial Environment Agency; and a bean sprout processing business owned by Mr. Amin at Jalan Makmur Pasar 3, Cinta Damai Village, Medan.

Based on direct field inspections, FLI Sumut discovered several critical findings, including:

– Liquid waste from the bean sprout production process was allegedly discharged directly into drainage channels without prior treatment. This poses a high risk of environmental contamination and threatens the health of local residents.
– No information boards, signs, or documents indicating the validity of business permits or environmental licenses were found at the site.
– Production activities have the potential to degrade water quality and cause environmental harm detrimental to surrounding communities.
– The businesses are suspected of failing to comply with statutory regulations regarding environmental approval (such as SPPL, UKL-UPL, or other environmental documents), liquid waste management, and pollution control.

Based on these findings, FLI Sumut has issued a formal letter of demand (somasi) to the business owners as an initial warning and measure to enforce compliance with environmental laws.

In the notice, FLI Sumut emphasized several key demands:

1. Immediately suspend the discharge of untreated liquid waste into drainage systems.
2. Implement waste management practices in accordance with established standards and regulations.
3. Provide written clarification regarding the status of business permits and environmental approvals.
4. Take concrete measures to prevent further pollution and restore the environment surrounding the business locations.

FLI Sumut has set a deadline of 14 (fourteen) working days from the receipt of the notice for these demands to be fulfilled.

Should there be no good faith or corrective actions taken within the specified timeframe, FLI Sumut will escalate the matter by reporting the issue to the Medan City Environment Agency, relevant provincial authorities, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in Jakarta, and law enforcement agencies as required by law.

Faisal C.G. Ompusunggu emphasized that this step reflects FLI’s commitment to preserving the environment and protecting the community’s right to a clean and healthy living space.

“FLI Sumut will not remain silent regarding business activities that potentially damage the environment. We urge all business operators to comply with regulations and take full responsibility for the impacts they cause,” he stated firmly.
