From Weapons to Cyberspace: TRIP’s Spirit Reignites at KOMENWA National Leadership Meeting

JAKARTA, February 3, 2026 – A solemn atmosphere filled Kalibata Heroes Cemetery on the morning of Monday, February 2, marking a meaningful opening to the 2nd National Leadership Meeting (Rapimnas) of Indonesia’s Student Regiment Command (KOMENWA). The presence of Rear Admiral (Ret.) Dr. Surya Wiranto, S.H., M.H., as one of the organization’s advisors, added historical weight to the event.

Titled “Transforming TRIP into a Resilient, Professional, and Integrity-Driven KOMENWA Indonesia”, the gathering was more than a routine meeting – it served as a declaration of generational shift, positioning KOMENWA to face modern defense challenges. In his address, Commander of KOMENWA Indonesia Dr. H. Datep Putra Saputra emphasized that this would be the final Rapimnas before transitioning to a National Command Meeting (Rakornas), signaling a more robust structural overhaul.

Rear Admiral (Ret.) Surya Wiranto – a former senior naval officer who now works as a lawyer and lecturer – reminded attendees of the historical roots of student movements in national defense. “Seventy-nine years ago, students in the Indonesian Student Armed Forces (TRIP) chose not only to study about independence but to defend it with weapons,” he stated.

Transformation Addresses the Challenges of the Times

The evolution from TRIP to KOMENWA reflects the nation’s response to shifting threats. Where battlefields once consisted of forests and cities, warfare has now moved to digital spaces, with cyber threats and disinformation posing risks of undermining national sovereignty.

“KOMENWA must be the vanguard of national awareness. It must stand as a bulwark for the state’s ideology,” Surya Wiranto stressed. Under Datep Saputra’s leadership, KOMENWA is actively exploring the establishment of a Student Naval Regiment as a supporting component of the Indonesian Navy, demonstrating that the role of educated youth in national defense must align with current security needs.

David Darmawan: The True Face of Student Regiment Ideals in the Digital Age

David Darmawan, invited as a guest of honor by Commander Datep Saputra, represents young people who wholeheartedly love their homeland. In this context, he symbolizes the student regiment (Menwa) idealism of building capacity to strengthen the nation’s cyber defense.

Amid concerns over declining nationalism among millennials, David’s presence and the spirit of the Rapimnas offer a counterbalance. They are proof that the principle of “Widya Castrena Dharma Siddha” (Knowledge and National Defense are a Sacred Duty) remains alive, adapted to modern contexts.

Preparing for Rakornas and Future Steps

The 2nd Rapimnas serves as a launchpad for the more coordinated Rakornas, aligning with the central government’s push for greater synergy. For KOMENWA, this transition means enhancing organizational capacity and professionalism.

With advisors like Surya Wiranto bringing expertise in military affairs, law, and maritime issues, KOMENWA is shaping itself into a strategic national reserve – resilient in physical defense, savvy in digital matters, and steadfast in ideological commitment.

As Surya Wiranto noted, “The battlefield has changed, but the oath remains the same.” From TRIP in 1947 to KOMENWA in 2026, the spirit endures: ready to safeguard Indonesia from all forms of threat, now and in the future.
