The INDONESIAN (Jakarta)— A youth figure from Maluku and prominent lawyer in Jakarta, Usra Waiulung SH, has issued a firm appeal to all Indonesians not to use religion as a tool for provocation that could divide national unity.
This statement was made in response to the controversy surrounding the report filed by the North Sumatra Civil Society Alliance against Yusuf Kalla at the North Sumatra Regional Police Headquarters. According to Waiulung, such action has the potential to trigger friction between religious communities if not handled wisely.
Waiulung emphasized that Yusuf Kalla is a figure who has proven to play a major role in creating peace, including in resolving the Ambon Conflict in 1999 and the conflict in Poso.
“We must not allow a figure known as a guardian of peace to be dragged into polemics that potentially damage the nation’s harmony,” he stated firmly.
He also highlighted the importance of understanding the statements made during the lecture at Gadjah Mada University in their entirety and without distortion. According to him, the views expressed were a critique of extremism and narrow fanaticism, not an attack on any specific religion.
Furthermore, Waiulung reminded that Indonesia was built on a strong foundation of diversity. Therefore, any effort that has the potential to divide the nation, especially by raising religious issues, must be stopped.
“Religion teaches love, peace, and mutual respect. It is not meant to be used as a tool to attack or provoke others,” he said.
He also invited the public to uphold the mandate of Article 29 of the 1945 Constitution, which guarantees religious freedom and emphasizes the importance of living side-by-side in peace.
In closing, Waiulung called upon all Indonesians—both Muslims and Christians—to strengthen brotherhood, reject hate speech, and not be easily provoked by issues that could damage unity.
“Protect Indonesia with tolerance. Do not let differences become a reason for division,” he concluded.
