People-Centered Economic Policies of President Prabowo to Safeguard Public Purchasing Power

PRIME NEWS POST

The INDONESIAN, (Jakarta)— Amid still lingering global economic pressures and uncertainty, the government under President Prabowo Subianto continues to demonstrate its commitment to preserving purchasing power and strengthening social protection for the public.

Starting July 2026, the government will resume distributing 10 kilograms of rice to 33.24 million beneficiary households for three consecutive months. Backed by an allocation of Rp17.54 trillion, the program forms part of a Rp26.34 trillion economic stimulus package for the second half of 2026.

The policy package also includes support to stabilize soybean prices for tofu and tempe producers. As a community-focused organization dedicated to public welfare and strengthening the national economy, PROUI expresses full support for this policy direction.

PROUI views the government’s move to reinforce the social safety net amid global economic shifts as tangible proof of the state’s presence—something the public urgently needs today.

With prices of several food commodities still fluctuating in the market, rice assistance and soybean price support are far more than figures in the state budget. These policies directly sustain the livelihoods of millions of Indonesian households while keeping small businesses running.

PROUI also commends the government’s consistency in using the Single National Socio-Economic Database as the basis for aid distribution. This step is critical to ensuring subsidies and social assistance are delivered more accurately, to the right recipients, and minimizing misallocation.

Support is also extended to the overarching direction of the 2026 fiscal policy, which champions Food, Energy, and Economic Sovereignty. Budget allocations of Rp164.4 trillion for food security and Rp402.4 trillion for energy security reflect the government’s seriousness in building a sustainable foundation for national self-reliance, rather than relying on short-term populist measures.

Programs such as the Free Nutritious Meals initiative—already reaching tens of millions of beneficiaries—Free Health Checks, and the establishment of tens of thousands of Red and White Village and Subdistrict Cooperatives demonstrate that the government’s economic agenda goes beyond short-term stabilization.

These efforts are also designed to improve human resource quality and drive people-centered economic activity down to the village and subdistrict levels.

PROUI notes early positive outcomes from these policies, including a declining poverty rate and inflation kept at relatively manageable levels—key factors in preserving purchasing power, particularly among lower- and middle-income groups.

These gains, however, must not breed complacency. Price volatility of essential goods, interest rate pressures, and distribution challenges for food and energy in remote regions remain priorities that demand shared oversight from the central government, local administrations, and all elements of civil society.

Accordingly, PROUI urges that food assistance and all subsidy and economic protection measures be implemented transparently, on time, to the intended recipients, and free of irregularities at the implementation level.

Oversight must be strengthened across the entire distribution chain—from relevant agencies, Bulog, and local governments down to village and subdistrict officials. Policies designed to help the public must not lose their impact due to weak field supervision.

PROUI also calls for Red and White Village and Subdistrict Cooperatives to function as productive, professional, and independent engines of local economic growth. These cooperatives must not remain merely administrative or ceremonial projects after establishment; they must expand business access, strengthen supply chains, and improve the welfare of rural communities.

We believe that people-centered economic policies, when implemented with clean, transparent, and accountable governance, form a solid foundation for a resilient, self-reliant, and prosperous Indonesia.

PROUI will continue to monitor the on-the-ground implementation of these policies and support every step taken by the administration of President Prabowo Subianto that genuinely aims to protect purchasing power, strengthen the people’s economy, and deliver prosperity for all Indonesians.
