The INDONESIAN, (Jakarta) — The Indonesian Law Students Association (PERMAHI) held the inauguration ceremony for its National Leadership Board (DPN), alongside a national seminar titled “Constitutional and Legal Values, Global Developments and Strategic Geopolitics, Reform and Transformation of Legal Institutions, Cadre Quality, and Professional Leadership” at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights building in Jakarta. The event was organized in commemoration of National Awakening Day.

The gathering was attended by hundreds of participants, board members, academics, national figures, and law student delegates from across Indonesia. Also present was the outgoing Secretary-General of PERMAHI’s National Board, Fajar Budiman.

During the inauguration, the new leadership of PERMAHI’s National Board was officially installed, comprising Azhar Sidiq as Chairman, Muhamad Afghan Ababil as Secretary-General, and A. Hans Tayeb Adrian as Treasurer-General, alongside other board members.

The national seminar featured prominent national speakers, including the Minister of Law and Human Rights, Dr. Supratman Andi Agtas, S.H., M.H.; the Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, and Immigration Affairs, Prof. Dr. Yusril Ihza Mahendra, S.H., M.Sc.; Chairman of Commission III of the House of Representatives, Dr. Habiburokhman, S.H., M.H.; representatives from the Attorney General’s Office; Rector of Jambi University, Prof. Dr. Helmi, S.H., M.H.; and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Indonesian Center for Strategic and Policy Studies (Puspolkam), Firman Jaya Daeli.

PERMAHI National Board Chairman Azhar Sidiq emphasized that PERMAHI aims to function as a progressive, active law student organization that delivers tangible benefits to the community and the nation.

“We want PERMAHI to be the epicenter of Indonesia’s legal leadership, capable of producing a generation of progressive jurists. Our focus is not merely discussion, but concrete action for the welfare of society,” Azhar stated during his inaugural address.

Azhar explained that following the inauguration, PERMAHI’s National Board will prioritize strengthening national consolidation among law students, establishing strategic research centers, enhancing public legal education, and expanding national and international collaboration.

According to him, law enforcement in Indonesia still faces serious challenges, including unequal access to justice, weak legal certainty, and widespread legal violations that are of public concern.

Consequently, PERMAHI is committed to monitoring and engaging with key issues such as social justice, human rights, corruption eradication, environmental protection, and illegal mining — practices deemed detrimental to the state and society.

“Law students must not remain silent. We will continue conducting research, advocacy, community assistance, and voicing public aspirations in an objective and constitutional manner,” he said.

Furthermore, PERMAHI’s National Board aims to improve the quality of its members through cadre development programs, intellectual forums, legislative workshops, advocacy training, as well as national and international seminars.

“PERMAHI must produce cadres who are intellectually sharp, morally strong, and ready to become future legal leaders,” Azhar added.

In the near future, PERMAHI plans to hold a Grand Consolidation of Indonesian Law Students and an International Seminar, bringing together academics, legal practitioners, national figures, and student representatives from across Indonesia to discuss global challenges, geopolitics, democracy, national stability, and legal transformation in the modern era.

Meanwhile, Firman Jaya Daeli, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Puspolkam, noted that law students play a critical role in safeguarding democracy and strengthening the rule of law.

“Law students must be able to respond to the challenges of our time. A state based on law is not only about enforcing regulations, but also about delivering justice and maintaining checks and balances within governance,” he stated.

Firman also emphasized that all state institutions must operate professionally and be subject to the law and the constitution without exception.

“Regardless of who leads, all state officials and government institutions must abide by the law and the constitution,” he asserted.

Through this inauguration and national seminar, PERMAHI reaffirmed its commitment to fostering collaboration with the government, law enforcement agencies, universities, youth organizations, and civil society to build a legal ecosystem that is sound, fair, and civilized.

In closing his remarks, Azhar called upon Indonesia’s younger generation to reject apathy toward legal and democratic issues.

“Law students must stand with the community, serve as the voice of the people, safeguard democracy, and ensure that the law truly functions as an instrument of justice for all Indonesian people,” he concluded.
