The INDONESIAN (Jakarta)– August always brings a distinct atmosphere to the Indonesian nation: the scent of damp earth in the morning, the rhythmic tread of uniformed boots striking asphalt, and the crisp call of command that cuts through the quiet. For some, August is merely an annual commemoration of history.
But for the extended family of the Indonesian Former Flag Raisers Association (Purna Paskibraka Indonesia / PPI), this month is a portal to the moment where sweat, tears, discipline, and pride converged in service to the Red and White Flag.
As we approach the Proclamation of Independence on 17 August, those memories spring vividly to life. We recall the trials of training at “Happy Village,” where individual ego was forged into unyielding solidarity. We remember the scorching sun, the ache of blistered feet, and the sacred instant when we kissed the flag, tears flowing freely.
These are not just memories—they are the bedrock of character that stays with us for life.
That experience taught us that bearing the title of “alumnus” does not mark the end of service.
On the contrary: stepping down from the flag‑raising ground is only the beginning of a broader dedication to the nation. A Paskibraka is measured not only by successfully hoisting the flag on Independence Day, but by how well they embody Pancasila values in every step long after the ceremony ends.
As part of Purna Paskibraka Indonesia, we carry forward a long legacy of struggle. The green sash once worn at our waist was more than a uniform: it was a constant reminder that patriotism, discipline, integrity, and love of country must remain alive in our hearts. These values guide us to stand as examples amid the challenges of our time.
Now, as the calendar turns toward 17 August, our thoughts and hopes turn to the prospective Paskibraka members training across Indonesia. They are fighting fatigue, homesickness, mental pressure, and the demands of discipline—just as we once did.
Here lies the true purpose of Purna Paskibraka Indonesia. Preparing for Independence Day is not only about folding flags, perfecting formations, or uniform movements.
More deeply, it is about passing on values and shaping character. PPI members must be a source of encouragement, mentors who build resilience and instill pride—so they understand they are not raising a piece of cloth, but the symbol of national sovereignty won through the struggle, sacrifice, and blood of our heroes.
Commemorating the independence fought for since 1945 must never become just an annual ritual or nostalgia. If the founders fought to seize freedom, today’s generation must safeguard, fulfil, and strengthen it through tangible work, integrity, and service in every field.
The days leading to 17 August are the right moment to reflect on the pledge we once made. Does the spirit of Red and White still burn in our work, studies, social service, and professions? Do discipline, integrity, compassion, and leadership remain part of our daily lives?
To all members of Purna Paskibraka Indonesia, wherever you are: let us stand together once more. Offer your moral support, effort, wisdom, and your very best to those who will bear the mandate as the National Flag Raising Troop this year.
Be the example that inspires, guides, and upholds the dignity of the Paskibraka as a forge for the nation’s future leaders.
Let us prove that a true Paskibraka never truly leaves the field of service—they simply move it to a far wider arena: Indonesia.
Once Red and White, always Red and White!
Paskibraka Salute.
