The INDONESIAN — Kings and sultans are symbols of greatness, wisdom, and the historical continuity of the Indonesian nation. Long before the formation of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), royal and sultanate institutions played an important role in maintaining social harmony, preserving noble cultural values, and serving as a unifying force amid the diversity of the Indonesian archipelago (Nusantara).

Throughout the nation’s history, kings and sultans have functioned not only as customary and cultural leaders but also as guardians of morality, guides for policy, and role models in upholding unity and solidarity. This legacy of values remains relevant today, especially in facing the challenges of globalization, cultural disruption, and potential national disintegration.

In the context of NKRI, the existence of kings and sultans holds a strategic position as a strengthener of national identity. They serve as symbols of cultural identity that enrich the Indonesian nation, while also supporting the values of tolerance, diversity, brotherhood, and equality. This role aligns with the constitutional mandate as outlined in the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, which affirms the importance of unity, social justice, and the welfare of all Indonesian people.

Kings and sultans can also serve as strategic partners of the government in national development. Through their moral, cultural, and historical influence, they are able to bridge communication between the state and society, encourage public participation, and strengthen social cohesion across various levels of the community. This role includes supporting development programs, increasing national awareness, and facilitating cross-community dialogue and cooperation.

Therefore, all elements of the nation should pay respect and provide support for the role of kings and sultans as unifiers of the Indonesian nation. With harmonious synergy between customary values, culture, and the state system, Indonesia will become increasingly firm as a sovereign, united, and dignified nation.
